Update: Police Charge Man with Leaving Scene of Deadly Hit-and-Run on Highway 67
PRICEVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Police have arrested and charged James Collins with leaving the scene of a deadly hit and run on Highway 67 near I-65.
The wreck happened about 4:45 a.m. Wednesday. 45-year old Mark Montgomery was on his way to work early this morning. As he approached the pilot travel center on Highway 67 in Priceville, an 18-wheeler pulled onto the highway in front of him. His motorcycle wound up wedged under the front of the truck. Montgomery was thrown across the highway and into the on-coming traffic. He was then struck by another vehicle.
“This vehicle left the scene. Later returned and talked with the police and after interviewing, we arrested the subject for leaving the scene of an accident,” said Ron Deweese with the Priceville Police Department.
That driver was identified as 36 year old Jimmy Collins of Decatur. Police say his case will likely be referred to the district attorney and could go before a grand jury for additional charges.
Meanwhile, state troopers are investigating the truck driver. He was not injured and thus far has not been charged. But troopers are searching carefully to see if there are any extenuating circumstances that led to the crash.
