HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Parents are reacting quickly and have a lot to think about following the statewide release of the list of failing Alabama schools on Tuesday.
But they aren’t the only ones with questions. Schools are still sorting out the news, too.
During the summer, many parents’ biggest concern is deciding how to keep their kids entertained. But parents of kids in failing schools have a little more to consider.
“Well, we always take kind of a step-back-and-see type mentality,” said Gray Rider. “We don’t like to make decisions spur of the moment.”
Rider has a child at Chapman Middle School. He’s taking it slow, but WHNT News 19 has learned the Huntsville City School district is fielding calls from parents who want immediate answers. They want to know how to take advantage of Accountability Act transfers right away.
We’re told they also have lots of questions. It turns out though district leaders say they still have questions as well. Deputy Superintendent Barbara Cooper tells WHNT News 19 they are still in the process of ‘fully defining’ their transfer process. She says right now, the central office is fielding calls from parents requesting transfers from failing schools to non-failing schools and at this point they are simply recording the names and contact information of those parents with requests. They say they will get back to them later when the process is more clear.
Meanwhile, Rider said he has little more faith. He also calls for parents to take on a little accountability of their own.
“Not all education can happen in the classroom,” he said. “A lot of it has to do with what you do for your kids whenever they get home.”
If parents in fact choose to transfer their children, they are asked to notify the school by August 1.
