HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Marshall Space Flight Center has a brand new control center and employees are excited about their new surroundings.
WHNT News 19 toured the facility Wednesday morning. The Payload Operations Integration Center manages all of the research that's done on the International Space Station.
The renovated room features a new video wall that shares high-definition live feeds. The wall allows the ground team to communicate more efficiently with the crew on the ISS and with other command centers around the world.
NASA officials say the new center is a big benefit to space exploration.
"To me, space station is a unique capability that the world needs," said Michael Suffredini, NASA ISS Program Manager. "It's going to benefit humanity, things that we're going to learn from this -- I keep telling people, you're going to cure cancer someday. There's amazing things that come from research in a microgravity environment."
The Payload Control Center began around-the-clock operations in 2001. These are the first upgrades in the control room since it was established.
