CADDO, Ala. (WHNT) – Authorities in Lawrence County are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a church Saturday night.
Firefighters from at least four Lawrence County volunteer fire departments rushed to the Pine Grove Holy Church of Christ around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Minutes later, firefighters on the scene reported flames had pierced the roof of the structure and the building was completely ablaze as more firefighters were called in to help contain the fire.
Church members said the main building was a total loss. But that did not stop them from gathering together for Sunday morning service, which was held a few feet away from the burned out sanctuary.
“Our building is gone, but our spirit is still here,” said Irwin Naylor, who has attended Pine Grove with his wife for the last fifty years. He and another church member who lives nearby were able to salvage a few items from the sanctuary before it was consumed by flames.
“I went in and found our bass guitar and brought it out. Then there was another boy went in, he found our other guitar and brought it out. Then went back in, got our piano, and got it out.”
It’s not yet clear where Pine Grove’s congregation will meet in the short term.
No word yet on what might have started the blaze, which remains under investigation.
