HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – A man charged in the shooting death of a friend was in court Friday. Xavier Shaquille Green pleaded guilty to felony murder. Prosecutors revealed one thing making Green’s charge interesting.
Green is charged with felony murder, but prosecutors say Green did not kill Cornelius Powell. The charge comes down to what happened during the shooting.
Green walked the halls of the Madison County District Courthouse to admit he committed a crime in Huntsville 18 months ago. A Madison County prosecutor revealed to a judge, Green and a friend were involved in a drug deal with two men at the Twickenham Village Apartments, on galaxy way in December 2011.
The prosecutor said something went wrong and the two men shot at Green and his friend. Green’s friend died in from shooting.
The other two men escaped charges because it was determined they acted in self-defense. State law allowed Green, who was committing another crime during the shooting, to be charged with felony murder.
The judge is expected to issue a sentence for Green July. Green faces 20-99 years in prison or a life sentence.
