HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - Family and friends welcomed home Team USA, a group of students who competed in the Greenpower Car Race across the pond.

The team was made up of current students and recent graduates from Grissom, Huntsville High School, and the New Century Center for Technology.

The Huntsville team made history, as the first and only team to ever represent the US in the competition.

The team of 15 Huntsville City Schools students and recent graduates spent 18 months planning, drafting, building and testing their electric car, with the help of professional engineers and teachers.
Being the team's first time competing in the competition, students say they expected it to simply be a fun learning experience.  Instead, they landed a place in the finals this fall.

The team placed 13th out of 50 in the four-hour heat, and 7th out of 14 in the 90 minute race.

"It's something they'll be able to remember forever. not just the trip but also what they've been able to accomplish in order to make this trip a success," said Steve Webb, a father of one of the competitors.

The team won't have much time to relax now that they are back. They have to begin preparing for Finals, held in London in October.
