LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – A teenager charged with murder in Florence appeared before a judge Wednesday as her attorneys tried another move to have Autumn Wood treated as a juvenile in the eyes of the court.
Circuit Judge Mike Jones denied a motion by Wood’s attorney, Jeff Austin, asking for his client to be given juvenile status. She has already been denied youthful offender status.
In March 2012, police say Wood got in a fight with Brooklyn Hollis. Wood was 17 at the time and Hollis was 14. Police say Wood grabbed a knife and stabbed Hollis in the heart, killing her.
Austin, the defense attorney, said he is not minimizing what happened, but said Wood was not old enough to realize what her actions were. He said if she had been older, it would not have happened.
The state contends Wood should be treated as any other adult.
Wood’s trial is scheduled for later this year.
