Cullman AL (WHNT) Gus Malzahn has coached his share of successful quarterbacks over the years, but none ran the "Gus Bus" quite like Cam Newton. The Carolina Panther's first round pick in 2011 recently enrolled back at Auburn in hopes of finishing his education. It was during that time when Malzahn says he and Newton had a chance to talk.
"He came to a lot of our practices, stopped by while he was finishing up his degree. He's doing very well and we're rooting for him," Malzahn said Wednesday during a media interview in Cullman.
Newton's production with the Panthers dipped slightly from his rookie to sophomore season's, but Malzahn says he expects his former duel threat to have a big season this year. "he's a great competitor and he talked about how to get better. He's got that in him and he will continue striving to improve."
Newton is entering his third year in the NFL.
