HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - With furlough notices now distributed, some 15,000 Redstone employees will have tough decisions to make in the near future.
Of course, that's only made more difficult by the murk of the furlough rules themselves.
There's two guides that can prove particularly helpful if you've got furlough questions.
The first comes straight from the Department of Defense, specifically from the Defense Civilian Personnel Advisory Service.
It's fifteen pages, and it gives details on some of the basic questions like, "What is an administrative furlough?" It also handles more in-depth queries, like how those furloughs impact paid and unpaid leave.
The document also addresses security clearances. After all, financial troubles can impact your ability to hold a sensitive position.
But this report specifies that a furlough is "a circumstance beyond your control", which would weigh in your favor for that kind of situation.
It also says your local Employee Assistance Program could help you with financial planning, if you're struggling with the furlough.
Another helpful resource comes from the US Office of Personnel Management. This guide is 60 pages, and it covers a much broader range.
This one goes question by question - addressing some pretty specific situations.
Take this one - 'If employees have a designated administrative furlough day off on the last workday before a holiday or the first workday after a holiday (but not on both days), will they be paid for the holiday?'
The answer to that question is yes, but more importantly, it gives you an idea of just how detailed the guide is.
All told, between the two documents, you're going to find the answers to a lot of your questions.
