HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) -- The Huntsville City Council approved an open container ordinance this week for the two new entertainment districts. On Thursdays and Fridays starting June 20th, people will be able to get a beverage in a "to-go" cup from a bar or restaurant in the district.

You can walk anywhere in the district, but you can't go into another bar or restaurant with the same cup. Huntsville Police told WHNT News 19 that the first 90 days will serve as a trial period where they can figure out exactly how to patrol the entertainment districts. The restricted 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. times are so they can learn exactly how to manage the new ordinance and what it brings with it.  "What that allows us to do is to figure out the problems we`re going to have," said Sargent Mark Roberts with HPD. "We need to know the resources that we`re going to need to patrol it safely and effectively."

The approved cups will have a logo on them so they are distinguishable from cups that are brought from home. Huntsville Police and the city council will review the open-container policy in a few months and will be able to extend the hours or days at any time.
