Huntsville, Ala. – After a strong second-place showing at the 2013 Gulf South Conference Softball Championships this past weekend, the University of Alabama in Huntsville continued its climb in the national rankings as the team jumped four spots to No. 14 in the latest edition of the NFCA Division II Softball Poll.
The Chargers are the second-highest ranked team in the NCAA South Region which places the national poll in line with the top two seeds for this weekend’s NCAA South Regional which will be hosted by top-seeded and No. 3 Valdosta State and second-seeded UAH.
No other GSC schools are featured in the rankings, but Tampa and Saint Leo – who will both playing at the Valdosta site in the regional – checked in at 15th and 23rd, respectively.
North Alabama – the No. 3 seeded in the region – dropped out of the poll after going 1-2 at the conference tournament.
The rankings are led by Indianapolis, and the Greyhounds are a team that the Chargers went into extra innings with earlier in the season. Southeast Oklahoma State is No. 2 with VSU in third, and the top five is rounded out by Armstrong Atlantic and Humboldt State.
Each team in the top five received at least one first-place vote.
UAH will return to the field with its new national ranking on Friday when it hosts West Alabama in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
