Six Lions Earns All-GSC Honors

Senior first baseman Josh Cyr of Huntsville and junior outfielder Jake Ward of Russellville lead a contingent of six University of North Alabama baseball players chosen for 2013 All-Gulf South Conference honors.

Cyr and Ward received first-team All-GSC honors, while second baseman Josh Carpenter, outfielder Josh Doyle, designated hitter Dylan Boston and pitcher Cade Medley were named second-team All-GSC.

Cyr, a four-year starter for the Lions who has set numerous career marks during the 2013 season, earned first-team All-GSC honors for the first time. Cyr was selected GSC Freshman of the Year in 2010 and earned second-team All-GSC honors as a sophomore and junior. This season he is batting .331 with a team-high 39 runs scored and 39 runs batted in. His .484 on base percentage ranks second in the GSC and his 41 bases on balls leads the league.

In his first season at UNA, Ward ranks second in the GSC in hitting with a .397 batting average and third in on base percentage at .481. He has scored 34 runs and driven in 23 and added eight extra-base hits and nine stolen bases in 13 attempts. He is also perfect in the field with no errors in 73 fielding chances this season.

Carpenter, a junior from Harvest, Ala., earned second-team All-GSC honors for the third straight season but for the first time at second base. He was GSC Freshman of the Year in 2011 and was a second-team All-GSC pick in 2011 and 2012 at shortstop before moving to second base this season. In 2013 he is hitting .309 with 22 runs scored and 18 RBI. He also has a .351 on base percentage and is a perfect 11-for-11 in stolen base attempts.

Doyle, a senior from Hartselle, is a two-year starter in the outfield at UNA and earned his first post-season honors. Although he missed several games early in the season due to injury, Doyle has started 35 games for the Lions in 2013 and is hitting .348 with 25 runs scored and 19 RBI. He ranks third in the GSC in steals with 24 in 27 attempts and is a stellar defensive outfielder.

Boston, a sophomore from Sheffield, is ranked among the GSC leaders in virtually every offensive category. He is fifth in batting average (.356), fourth in slugging percentage (.550), fourth in hits (64), fourth in runs batted in (41), first in doubles (20), fifth in home runs (5), first in total bases (99), fifth in total plate appearances (202), second in at bats (180) and third in sacrifice flies (5).

Medley, a junior from Harvest, Ala., has also excelled in his first season at UNA. Medley boasts a 6-1 record with a 3.44 earned run average. He has GSC wins over Delta State, Shorter, West Florida, Christian Brothers and Valdosta State, to go with a non-conference win over Kentucky State. Medley has pitched 70.2 innings this season, allowng just 27 earned runs while walking just 15 and striking out 57.

UNA, 27-19-1 overall, begins play in the Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Thursday, May 2 at 3:00 PM against Valdosta State.
