National Sneaker Design Contest Could Bring Big Bucks To Bob Jones High

MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) — Bob Jones High School art students have a chance to win big bucks for their school all by providing designs for a popular and classic sneaker.
Vans sneakers are loved by skateboarders and the fashion forward alike.

Bob Jones’ assistant band director Leigh Thomas got an email from a colleague about Vans’ student sneaker design contest. She sent in an application and soon Bob Jones students were sent four blank sneakers.

“I thought it was really cool because it’s Vans and half the kids in this school are probably wearing Vans right now,” says Thomas.

Students drew up and voted on the best design in the themes of music, art, action sports and local flavor. Art instructor Robin Lasko says a competitive spark really got the creative juices flowing in her students.

“Once the kids found out that if they won it meant $50,000 for the school that was even more incentive for them to get this thing together,” says Lasko, “and they’ve done an amazing job.”

One school from each of the five regions will pre-qualify by May 14 for a trip to New York City to find out who wins the big prize. Bob Jones is one of ten schools to enter the contest in the southeast region and will also qualify to win $10,000 if the student artwork is selected as a runner-up in the contest.
