The University of Alabama in Huntsville softball team maintained its position at No. 3 in the newest installment of the NCAA South Region rankings as announced by the NCAA Division II Softball Committee on Wednesday.

At the conclusion of the regular season and conference tournaments, the rankings will be used to seed the eight teams that make the NCAA South Regional portion of the national field with three spots automatically awarded to the three conference champions from the region.

The Gulf South Conference continued to hold a firm grip on the top of the rankings with North Alabama ranked first for the second week in a row with Valdosta State in second. The Chargers are slated to face the top-ranked Lions on Sunday at Charger Park.

The top two teams at the end of the regular season and conference tournaments will serve as the hosts for the NCAA South Region 1 and NCAA South Region 2 tournaments.

After the trio of GSC schools is a quartet of Sunshine State Conference institutions – led by No. 4 Tampa. Saint Leo was fifth and was followed by No. 6 Rollins and seventh-ranked Barry. West Alabama slipped one spot to No. 8 this week.

Palm Beach Atlantic and Albany State – who has already captured one of the eight spots in the field by winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference – were ranked ninth and 10th, respectively.
