HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) – With the April 15 tax deadline not far away, the Internal Revenue Service today reminded tax filers in the Huntsville area that most local free tax help sites won’t be open much longer.
One tax help site will be open Sat., April 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Optimist Recreation Center, 703 Oakwood Ave., NE, in Huntsville. Appointments can be made by calling Impact Alabama at 1-888-99-TAX-AL.
The free tax help is provided by IRS-certified volunteers and is open to filers whose household income was below $51,000 in 2012 or who file a simple tax return.
To find other free help sites, including those open on weekdays, tax filers can call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 or visit www.irs.gov and search for “Volunteer Tax Help.” Some sites specialize in helping filers who are age 60 or older.
To have your tax return prepared at one of these sites, bring the following information with you:
-Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
-Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
-Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
-Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
-A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
-Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check
-Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider’s tax identifying number (the provider’s Social Security Number or the provider’s business Employer Identification Number) if appropriate
