Update: Victims Identified in Albertville Crash

ALBERTVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)– Marshall County Coroner Marlon Killion has identified the young mother and her infant son who were killed in an accident Saturday in Albertville.  Killion says Jerica Ashley Clay, 21 and her son, James Brian Maynard, 10 months, both of Boaz, were killed in the crash.

The wreck happened just before 1:00 pm on Baltimore Avenue (Alabama Highway 205), just north of the intersection with Young Street.

Police say a black Kia Forte driven by Clay was going north on Baltimore Avenue and collided head-on with a white Nissan Pathfinder traveling south, in the right-most southbound lane by the curb.

“We don’t know the exact circumstances of the cause at this point but we’re still investigating,” Albertville Police Captain Jason Keeton said late Saturday afternoon.

The two vehicles collided with so much force that when a tow truck tried to pull the SUV back onto the flatbed, it dragged the car with it.  It was not until the wrecker lifted the Pathfinder off the ground that the vehicles finally separated.

Keeton said seatbelts were in use, and child restraining seats were used properly.

“It’s a somber day for us,” he said.

Airbags deployed on both vehicles, and the people riding in the SUV were also hurt.

“Two adults and two more children injured,” Keeton said.

“Three of those injuries were taken to Marshall Medical Center South [in Boaz] and one [of the adults] was flown via LifeSaver [helicopter] to Huntsville.”

Keeton said their injuries are not believed to life-threatening.

The Albertville Police Department’s traffic homicide investigators was at the scene.

“When we have an accident with major injuries or fatalities he is called in to work the scene whether we think there be any type of homicide investigation or not,” Keeton said.

“Just to make sure all bases are covered and make sure the accident is properly worked.”
