Remembering the Super Outbreak of Tornadoes in 1974
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)– April 3rd and 4th marks the 39th Anniversary of the super outbreak of tornadoes of 1974. The tornadoes that day tore a path across North Alabama that in many cases would be followed almost exactly by the tornadoes of Apirl 27, 2011.
While the outbreak set records and is an event people remembered for decades, it was surpassed greatly by the April 27th storms.
Some sources say 77 deaths occurred in North Alabama during the outbreak, others cite 86. The April 2011 storms killed more than 300 people.[ooyala
