FLORENCE, Ala. — University of North Alabama starters Chad Boughner and Michael Watkins gave stellar performances as the Lions swept a Gulf South Conference double-header from Union Friday, 5-3 and 5-0. Sunday’s game between the Lions and Bulldogs has been rescheduled for 11 a.m.
With the sweep UNA improves to 18-13 overall and 8-6 in the GSC. Union falls to 6-18 and 2-11.
Boughner pitched seven and 1/3 innings of game one and left with the Lions holding a 5-0 lead before Eric Wilson was able to stop a rally that gave UNA the 5-3 win. In game two, Watkins got his second complete-game shutout in conference play this season, 5-0.
The opening game was scoreless into the fifth inning before UNA got a solo home run from Dylan Boston. The Lions then added three runs in the sixth. Thomas Lundborg, Josh Carpenter and Jake Ward all singled to load the bases with no outs. Josh Doyle drove in a run on a fielder’s choice and Josh Cyr followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0. Lunberg was hit-by-pitch in the seventh and eventually scored on a Ward single to make it 5-0.
Union got two singles off Boughner in the eighth before Wilson came on in relief. Wilson gave up a double on his first pitch to Jim Martin which drove in two runs and cut UNA’s lead to 5-2. Cole McAdams then singled in Martin to make it 5-3. Wilson then struckout the next two batters to end the inning and then worked his way out of the ninth, despite allowing two singles.

In the nightcap, Watkins (3-4) pitched seven innings, allowing just three hits and no runs. Watkins gave up a leadoff single on the first pitch of the game to Colton Speed, then retired the next 15 straight Union batters. In the sixth the Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single, but Watkins got a groundout that forced a runner out at home, then got a double play to end the threat.
UNA got two runs in the top of the first on a two-run single by Almon, then added two more in the third and one in the fourth. In the third inning, Ward had a leadoff double and Doyle and Cyr walked to load the bases. Boston drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Almon drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-0.
