Lady Bulldogs Take Game 1, Comeback Falls Short in game 2
Normal- The Alabama A&M softball team split games with Jackson State on Friday afternoon. The Maroon & White took game one of the doubleheader 6-5 and lost game two 5-4.
The Lady Tigers hit the scoreboard first scoring a single run in the top of the first inning. Canessa Swanson singled off A&M starter Meaghan Gray to score Jasmine Warren. JSU would hold the lead for three complete innings. At the bottom of the fourth, Gray returned the favor singling off JSU’s Breea Jamerson to bring in Anisa Britt. With the score now leveled at one, the inning ended.
The fifth inning saw fireworks offensively; JSU was able to reach and tally extra bases on two Lady Bulldog errors. The Tigers would score three runs to regain the lead at 4-1. A&M did not back down after the two mistakes, they immediately answered the Tiger’s rally, with one of their own. A&M evened the game once again scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Fayesha Ward, LaQueesha Poe and Jasmin Riley would even the game at four.
The Lady Tigers would score their final run of the game in the sixth inning on another Swanson single; but again the Maroon & White had an answer. A&M would tie the score again at five, and eventually tally the winning sixth run in the bottom of the sixth. The sixth inning score ended at 6-5 with the Lady Bulldogs taking game one after a scoreless seventh inning by the Jackson State.
This was the first Maroon & White victory over the Lady Tigers since falling 2-1 in a three game series last season. It also marked the first time JSU would lose to a conference opponent.
Game two saw JSU start out hot. The Lady Tigers immediately hit the scoreboard tallying four runs in the first. An A&M error allowed JSU to record extra bases, and the Tigers capitalized scoring the first run of the game. Swanson would add the second run on a Tayler Nave sacrifice fly. Leading 2-nil, Lauren Aikens hit a two-run homer over left field off A&M’s Cassandra Brown, bringing the score to 4-0. After falling down early, A&M would answer with a run to end the first inning at 4-1.
After two scoreless innings, the Maroon & White would close the deficit to 4-2 on a Poe single that scored Nicole Norton. The A&M defense again did their job, not allowing the Tigers to score a run in the fifth inning. Jasmine Riley would bring the Lady Bulldogs within one at 4-3 on a solo homerun. This was Riley’s second of the season and the Lady Bulldogs 10th.
JSU would answer the Riley homerun with a run in the sixth inning. A&M scored one run in the bottom of the seventh but it wasn’t enough as JSU took game two 5-4 evening the series.
The final and deciding game of the league matchup will be played on Saturday, March 30th with a first pitch set for 11 a.m. at Lady Bulldog field.
