One Child Killed In Sign Collapse At Birmingham Airport; Others Hurt

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Police and emergency workers responded to an accident at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport on Friday.  A large flight information sign fell on a mother and her three children.

We understand one of the children died.  He was 10 years old and died shortly after arriving at a nearby hospital.

The large wall sign weighs between 300 and 400 pounds, and collapsed about 2 p.m.  A mother and three children were rushed to a nearby hospital.

According to ABC33/40, Birmingham Fire Battalion Chief Donald Jones said it took eight to 10 bystanders to lift the wall off of the victims. The children were between the ages of 6 and 10.  We understand the mother was seriously hurt.

Airport officials do not know when they will be able to reopen the terminal.
