NEW MARKET, Ala. (WHNT) - The New Market/Riverton Recreation Center was severely vandalized over the weekend.

Board members reported the break-in to the Madison County Sheriff's Department Monday after discovering the extensive damage. They believe a group of people broke out a window and tore through the center, pouring bleach on equipment, using fire extinguishers and spray painting on walls.

The vandals also stole money inside the concession stand cash register.  Investigators collected evidence but they are asking anyone with information about the crime to contact them as soon as possible.  You can call the Madison County Sheriff's Office at (256) 532-3731.

While the rec center is owned by the county, most of the funds to operate the building are provided by donations.  Board members say they are not sure how they will pay to clean the mess up by next month when spring baseball and softball begins.

If you would like to assist in cleanup or make a donation, contact the New Market\Riverton Recreation Center through their Facebook page at:

There was already a community cleanup day planned on Saturday to get the rec center and park ready for opening day.  If you have a few hours to spare, please come to the center and help.  The cleanup effort starts at 8 a.m.  The rec center is located at 447 Hurricane Road in New Market.
