Pro-Choice Activists Rally For Women’s Rights

Men and women, young and old, gathered at Big Spring Park on Sunday with one unified message: That women should have the right to choose with regards to abortion and reproductive health.

“It shouldn’t be my decision, it shouldn’t be the legislature’s decision. It should be [a woman's] decision,” said activist Joe Ward.

The pro-choice activists came to protest what they call a “War on Women,” pointing to legislation that if passed would place further regulations on abortion clinics.

“They’re called TRAP bills — Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers — and we have a real problem with those bills,” said Clete Wetli, Chair of the Madison County Democrats. “They’re medically unnecessary.  What they’re really trying to do is shut down clinics through regulations.”

Protestors proclaimed a woman’s right to choose while also focusing on the need for prevention without legislation.

Democratic lawmakers have proposed bills to counter Republican efforts in the State House and Senate, however, none of them made it past committee.
