Purple Downs White, 17-7, In UNA Spring Game
Florence, Ala. - Luke Wingo threw for 116 yards and also rushed for a touchdown to help lead the Purple to a 17-7 win over the White in the 2013 University of North Alabama football spring game.
The White team broke on top with 5:57 left in the second quarter when Jalen Reedus picked off a Jacob Thomas pass and returned in 54 yards for a touchdown. Taylor Pontius added the extra-point to make it 7-0.
The Purple responded with a five-play, 65-yard drive for a touchdown. Chris Coffey scored on a three-yard run to end the drive, but Pontius PAT attempt went wide right and the White continued to lead 7-6.
A Terrance Hayward fumble recovery on the ensuing possession gave the Purple the ball back and Wingo led a 22-yard, seven-play drive to take the lead. Wingo scored on a two-yard dive on a fourth-and-goal call to make it 12-7. He then passed to Grant Lake for the two-point conversion to make it 14-7.
The only score in the second half was a 21-yard Will Craig field goal at the 2:49 makr of the fourth quarter to extend Purple’s lead to 17-7.
Wingo was nine-of-15 for 116 yards. Diamond Simmons was the leading rusher for Purple with 60 yards on 11 carries. Will Minor carried 15 times for 35 yards. Coty Spurling was the leading receiver for Purple with three catches for 58 yards.
Chris Alexander was four-of-six passing for the White for 81 yards and Jacob Tucker was two-of-five for 49 yards. Lamonte Thompson led the White ground attack with 12 carries for 51 yards. Lee Mayhall had three catches for 85 yards for the White.
