The University of Alabama in Huntsville men’s basketball team will open up play at the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championships on Saturday as the two seed of the South Regional and will take on a familiar foe in seventh-seeded Christian Brothers. Tip-off is slated for 1:30 p.m. CDT at the Jenkins Field House on the campus of host and top-seed Florida Southern College.
UAH enters the event with a record of 23-5, while the Bucs own a mark of 21-8.
The Chargers are making their fourth consecutive appearance in the national tournament and seventh overall, and this season’s tourney marks a return to the site of the program’s first-ever berth as UAH defeated LeMoyne-Owen in the first round at FSC in 2000 before falling to Tampa in the regional semifinals.
Of the seven other teams in this year’s field, the Chargers have met three before at a regional. The team defeated both Benedict and Christian Brothers last year in Huntsville while falling to Rollins in three separate tournaments to have a 2-3 all-time record again the field in tournament play.
With that contest last year in the Rocket City, UAH and the Bucs have met six times in the past two years with the Chargers winning five of the contests before dropping a 55-48 decision in Memphis on Feb. 14.
The Chargers are led by three that score in double figures including Daktronics South Region Player of the Year Jaime Smith who averages more than 18 points per game and the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year Wayne Dedrick who is scoring 12.6 points per game.
Dedrick has been strong of late as the Tuscaloosa native has hit 14 3-pointers in the team’s last three games while scoring 22.3 points per contest during the stretch.
Zane Campbell is also averaging 12.6 points per contest on the season, and he and fellow seniors Smith, Xavier Baldwin have been a part of the four straight tournaments including two championships in 2011 and 2012.
If the team is to record a three-peat at the regional, it will first have to get through the Bucs who captured the title at last week’s GSC Championships.
CBU is riding a five-game winning streak and has won eight of its last nine games including the home victory over the Chargers. Four players score in double figures for Christian Brothers including all-GSC selection Michael Drake who scores 14.1 points per contest. He scored 15 against UAH in the Bucs’ victory, while Drew Hildreth scored 23 points as he hit five 3-pointers.
