HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - This week's Pay It Forward features a husband and wife who have committed their lives to helping children in need of a loving family.
Nikki McElroy nominated Erica and Aaron Hammond because of their willingness to adopt children and give them a loving home.
"God laid it on their heart that adoption was something they could do and not only adoption, but adoption for children who are fragile, medically," said McElroy.
The Hammonds already had two biological sons when they decided to adopt a scared, sick, tiny Chinese girl four years ago. Clara Youme, or 'You You' as she is known, is now thriving.
"Her adoption actually has just changed our whole lives, the way that we are with each other, our walk with the Lord, it's just impacted so much of our life," said Erica Hammond.
So much so, the Hammonds decide to adopt a sister for You You. According to Paige Burrough, the Hammonds were told they were matched with an 18-month-old girl and were very excited to be getting her.
"All was going well, until they found out this little girl was actually a little boy," said Burrough.
But that didn't stop them. "They just took this as God's will that this little boy needed their assistance," Burrough said.
To throw another hitch in the plan, the Hammonds received word they had also been matched with a 5-year-old girl. Despite both children having heart problems and needing special medical care, the Hammonds are embracing them and adding them to their family and that's why they received our Pay It Forward.
"We believe the very act of adopting a child, giving them a loving home, a safe place, a forever family is the very definition of paying it forward," said McElroy. "The Hammonds are such an example of how beautiful it really can be."
The Hammonds have an account set up with Adopt Together, an organization which allows people to make tax-deductible donations to help with adoption expenses.
