MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) -- A group of local students from the Tennessee Valley is set to travel to Italy next week. 21 seniors from Madison Academy and 32 adults will leave on Wednesday and head overseas for a 10-day trip.

"The eyes of the world are on Rome right now," said Dr. Michael Weimer. "We're going to be right there in the middle of it."

Principal Dr. Michael Weimer is leading the group on the trip. The selection of the 266th Pope increases the excitement for the group of students. Weimer says it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for his students.

"Of course we're being a little bit selfish," said Weimer. "The Sistine Chapel is closed right now but hopefully it will be open by the time we get there, I want my students to be able to see it."

The group leaves on Wednesday and will be gone for ten days. They will also visit Florence and Pompeii.
