HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Crews broke ground months ago on the $100 million Twickenham Square lodging, living, retail and office space development on the old Councill Courts public housing site near Huntsville Hospital.
The development will be anchored by a Publix supermarket, a 101-room Homewood Suites Hotel, 246 loft apartments and a five-story office tower.
It’s touted as something the city needs to attract and recruit a professional workforce: a place to live, work, shop and eat. Huntsville City Director of Zoning and Planning Marie Bostick says the development is coming along at a swift pace.
“The city deck is clearly out of the ground now, the apartment deck is out of the ground,” says Bostick. “Permits have been issued for the office building and we’re working with both the hotel and the Publix to get their permits in order.”
There is much anticipation about the new supermarket as well as the eatery options within the development. Bostick says details of which restaurants may move in are still up in the air.
“You know, they do have the tenant spaces and restaurants that are high on everyone’s list,” said Bostick. “They think they’ll be able to back-fill into those tenant spaces but I haven’t heard any names yet.”
The Twickenham Place office tower already has a tenant: Huntsville Hospital’s clinical laboratory, which when finished will be in the top 10 largest clinical labs in the country.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle says the development should generate more than $2 million annually in sales, property, lodging and liquor taxes.
