Lion Basball Splits Doubleheader With Shorter

Florence, Ala. – Cade Medley fired a complete-game in a 10-1 win in the nightcap as the University of North Alabama baseball team split a Gulf South Conference double-header with Shorter. The Hawks won the opening game 7-1.

With the win in the final game, UNA took the series from Shorter 2-1 and the Lions now stand 8-5 overall.

Shorter never trailed in the opener, scoring one run in the first inning and adding another in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. UNA scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth when Jake Ward reached on an error and later scored on a double by Josh Cyr. Shorter then added a run in the fifth and four in the seventh for the 7-1 win.

Starting pitcher Stuart Charleston (2-2) held the Lions hitless into the fourth inning and went eight strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits. He walked one and struckout four.

UNA starter Michael Watkins (1-2) pitched six and 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Daymon Eriksen came on in relief and allowed three hits and a walk before Drew Mobley entered the game. Mobley pitched the final two and 2/3 innings, allowing no runs on one hit.

Cyr led UNA in the opening game with two hits.

The opening game loss was the first home defeat for UNA this season after a 7-0 start at home.

In game two, Medley (2-1) got his first complete-game win of the season, allowing just one run on eight hits over seven innings.

The Lions took the lead in the first inning on an Eric Wilson single and an RBI-single from Cyr. UNA then added five runs in the second and four in the fourth for the 10-1 win. UNA loaded the bases in the second before Thomas Lundborg was hit-by-pitch to force in a run. Three runs then scored on a throwing error by Shorter’s first baseman. Andrew Almon drove in the final run with an RBI single.

North Alabama loaded the bases again in the fourth before Matthew Tittle forced in a run when he was hit-by-pitch. Bradley Noland and drove in a runs with ground balls and Josh Carpenter drove in the final run with an RBI single.

UNA hosts Martin Methodist Tuesday (March 5) in a single game at 3 p.m., and hosts Maryville in a double-header Wednesday (March 6) at 2 p.m.
