Lions Baseball Opens Conference with Win
FLORENCE — The University of North Alabama baseball team won its Gulf South Conference opener in dominating fashion Saturday at Mike Lane Field with a 10-0 win over the Shorter Hawks.
UNA starting pitcher Chad Boughner two-hit complete-game shutout, retiring the last 17 consecutive Shorter batters. Both of the Hawks hits were infield singles and Boughner walked one other batter. He struckout two. With the shutout, Boughner, a senior from Florence, has now pitched 18 and 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings for the Lions. He is 2-1 this season and has a 27-11 career mark at UNA.
UNA got two runs in the second inning as Jake Ward walked and Bradley Noland followed with a single. An RBI-single from Thomas Lundborg made it 1-0 and an RBI-double from Eric Wilson made it 2-0.
The Lions added five more runs in a big fourth inning as seven straight batters reach base. Noland, Andrew Almon and Dylan Boston had RBI-singles and Josh Cyr had a two-run single.
With the Lions leading 7-0, UNA added three insurance runs in the fifth. Shorter pitchers walked the bases loaded and Cyr forced in a run with a walk. Boston then doubled into the right-center gap to drive in two more and make the final count 10-0.
UNA out-hit Shorter 10-2 led by Ward, Noland and Boston with two each.
The Lions and Hawks will play a double-header at Mike Lane Field on Sunday beginning at noon.
