DeKalb County Hosts Safe Schools Summit
RAINSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)– School leaders, elected officials and law enforcement all came together Monday afternoon for a safe school summit in DeKalb County. Superintendent Hugh Taylor organized the meeting.
“Today we want to start talking about how we can better prepare our schools to be safe environments for our children to learn in,” Taylor said.
The superintendent says in too many cases schools didn’t have this type of meeting until after something bad happened. So he sees this as an opportunity to get ahead of the problem.
DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris was also at the meeting. He says it’s important for deputies to know how to respond to an incident at individual schools, rather than one plan for all 12 county schools.
“Every school is a different situation,” Harris said. “If you look all over the nation, nothing ever happens the same. You have to be able to react when you get there.”
The summit may also lead to a safe schools task force being formed in the county.
