HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT)-- Last week it was announced that Huntsville International Airport is once again the most expensive airport in America.   It's not a ranking the airport is proud of, and airport officials are trying to fight back.

The Huntsville/Madison County Airport Authority has launched an online petition they are hoping the public will sign.

"The main thing we are looking to find out from this petition is we have one question that we are asking everyone and it's do you think that local airports should have the ability to negotiate airfares for their community," says spokesperson Chantel Minish.

She says while the airlines were deregulated in 1978, airports did not benefit.

"The airports were not deregulated at that time.  So we are still burdened with several regulations that cause us not to be able to negotiate airfares on behalf of our community," says Minish.

The airport hopes to use the petition as leverage in hopefully changing the law.  Click here to read the petition.  It includes a link where you can sign it.
