FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) - Shawn Johnson was found guilty by a Lauderdale County jury this afternoon.
Johnson is charged with the murder of Keith Barnett. Barnett died in 2000, and Johnson was arrested in 2010 along with his brother, Shannon Johnson.
Shawn Johnson showed no emotion as the judge read his fate: guilty of murder.
However as officers escorted Johnson back to jail, the man convicted of the fatal beating says the jury got it all wrong.
“I`m not guilty and I love my family,” said Johnson.
As Barnett's family exited the courtroom after a draining week of testimony, family and friends erupted in tears and hugs. Barnett's father says he always dreamed this day would come.
“He was my life so this was a glorious day for me,” said the victim’s father, Kenneth Barnett.
Johnson's attorneys say they are shocked by the jury's decision because no physical evidence or DNA linked Johnson to the crime.
“I hate what happened to Mr. Barnett, but I just don`t believe Mr. Johnson did it,” said Johnson’s attorney, Jamy Poss. “I wish the family would get to find out what happened to their son.”
After a week on trial, Johnson could spend the rest of his life behind bars. A judge will sentence Johnson on March 28th.
A grand jury indicted both men, but Shannon Johnson agreed to plead guilty to lesser charges in exchange for his testimony in the case.
During the trial this week, Shannon Johnson took the stand and surprised prosecutors by saying he lied under oath in previous interviews with investigators.
If Shannon Johnson is found guilty of lying to the court, prosecutors say they will take his plea deal off the table.
