Esther Gabrielides wants to lose a few pounds. Like many of us, she lost a good amount of weight – 17 pounds or so – a couple of years back. Slowly, they’ve returned.
Gabrielides said the weight started to creep back up when she stopped using an app on her smartphone called Lose It. “It just [made] it much easier,” she said, “You can scan a bar code of an item and it will calculate what you ate for you.”
Apps like Lose It, along with thousands of others on the market, are designed to make keeping a fitness journal easier. Studies show people who keep a log of what they eat and how much they exercise up a person’s chances of slimming down.
“When it’s in an app, you actually see immediately how many calories you are taking in,” Martha McKittrick, a registered dietician with New York Presbyterian Hospital explained, “You’ll know how many [calories] you have left for the day.”
Health experts warn though – apps only work if you’re totally honest. The accuracy of apps and the calories they allot for each food item can also very – so you may want to cross check with nutrition labels. Calorie burned estimates for different exercises can also be inaccurate. You should try to pick an app with good reviews – which can easily be found in your app store.
