UNA Adds 27 Football Signees
Florence, Ala. - The University of North Alabama football program signed 27 student-athletes to National Letters of Intent Wednesday as the Lions added 20 high school signees and seven transfers from two-year schools. UNA head football coach Bobby Wallace said he was excited about the signing class and said the Lions made significant gains on the defensive line, at cornerback and at receiver.
UNA also added three transfers who enrolled at UNA prior to the Spring semester.
“It’s an exciting time of year,” Wallace said. “It’s just like the start of a new season. Everyone is excited andhas a lot of anticipation and we feel really good about our signing class.”
After signing 41 freshmen on signing day a year ago, Wallace said the Lions went a little bit heavier than normal with transfers this year since there is only one player left in the program from the school’s 2010 signing class, prior to his arrival at UNA. “We’ve got a lot of good players on the team, but the transfers should help strengthen us a little bit.”
Wallace said he was particularly pleased to have been able to add a number of local signees, getting 17 student-athletes from within a 100-mile radius of the school.
“We definitely helped ourselves on the defensive line and at cornerback,” said Wallace. “The players we have added will be a big boost for us in those areas, and we added some help at outside receiver with three signees at 6-foot-1 or taller.”
