HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT)--  The New Orleans Hornets are changing their name to the Pelicans and in the process turning a little known Twitter user from north Alabama into a social media superstar, all because of her Twitter handle: @pelicans.

Michele Davis, who lives in Owens Crossroads, works at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, and just so happens to  really, really love pelicans. She has held the @pelicans handle since January 2008, when her husband signed her up on Twitter.

"They [pelicans] are just so majestic.  I love watching them soar over the waves," Davis told WHNT News 19 Monday. "My husband asked me what my username should be, I said, "Pelicans," because I love pelicans. They're my favorite animal," Davis added.

Her love affair with the feathered creatures began in 2008 when she first pet a pelican.  Davis was living in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Here is the original report on the Twitter handle situation from Deadspin that launched Davis into social media stardom.

WHNT News 19 reached out to media relations at the Hornets but they have not returned our phone calls.
