Lady Lions Rout West Florida
Pensacola, Fla - The University of North Alabama women’s basketball team shot over 65 percent from the floor in the first half, building a big lead it would never relinquish during a 78-52 Gulf South Conference win at West Florida Thursday evening.
UNA post players Nichelle Fillmore and Mekena Randle took control early in the contest to lead the Lions to their second straight win to keep the team tied atop the GSC standings. With the win, North Alabama sits at 14-6 overall and 7-3 in league play.
On Thursday, Fillmore and Randle went a combined 11-for-14 from the floor with 25 first-half points. West Florida had no answer as the Lions took a 43-19 lead into the break.
The Argonauts never got within 20 in the second half while the Lions emptied the bench. The lead reached 33 at the 6:43 mark on a pair of free throws by Kaseama Ashbourne. The sophomore set a new career high with 12 points on the night.
North Alabama turned in another solid defensive performance, limiting UWF to 27 percent shooting for the game, including an 0-for-8 showing from three-point range. The Lions also forced 26 turnovers which were converted into 34 points.
Fillmore finished with a game-high 22 points, one point shy of her career-high set during the team’s last outing against West Alabama. Randle added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. For the game, UNA held a 44-28 advantage in points in the paint.

UNA will continue its GSC road trip Saturday at Valdosta State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. EST at The Complex on the VSU campus.
