HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident involving a pedestrian on Meridian Street, between Maple and Abingdon Avenues. It happened just after 6 p.m. Thursday.
Huntsville Police said a black pickup truck struck and killed Russell Fowler, 53. Fowler was trying to cross the street. Investigators told WHNT News 19 Fowler was wearing dark clothing and did not use a crosswalk.
The driver immediately stopped and called police. Detectives on scene said the driver would likely not face charges given the circumstances. It was eerily similar to another fatal accident exactly one week ago on University Drive, when another pedestrian who was not using a crosswalk was also struck and killed.
“Upon arrival we found the subject was already deceased,” said police spokesman Sgt. Marc Moon. “He was not crossing at a crosswalk. [He] had on dark clothing, apparently he didn’t see the vehicle, and the vehicle driver didn’t see him in time to stop…It doesn’t look like any charges will be filed against the driver of the truck.”
Fowler lived in Huntsville. Police say he is the sixth person to die in a traffic accident in the city of Huntsville since the new year began.
Memorial services for Fowler will be held Wednesday, February 6, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville.
