HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Police dealt with a standoff situation Wednesday afternoon. Dozens of officers were standing guard around the Light House Apartments on Max Luther Drive. One officer was punched in the face during the standoff.
People in the area of Max Luther Dr. around noon may have seen a crowd of officers standing in a parking lot. Marked and unmarked patrol cars blocked access into the lot.
“Officers in the North District got a call,” said Huntsville Police Captain Mike Izzo.
Officers went to the apartments to check on two people living in the private facility. One of them called 911 to tell dispatchers the other person was harassing him.
“When the officers were in the lobby, the offender became very violent and started fighting with the officers,” said Capt. Izzo.
Capt. Izzo told WHNT NEWS 19 the man punched an officer in the face, ran into his apartment and locked the door. Police sent in a negotiator.
“We talked to the subject. He cooperated and came out calmly,” added Capt. Izzo.
Police brought the man outside and put him into a patrol car.
“We felt it was in the best interest of the offender to be evaluated and helped to make sure this does not occur again,” added Capt. Izzo.
One officer accidentally spayed pepper spray into the eyes of another officer when the suspect jumped out of the way.
“The officer assaulted felt it was more important to get this guy the help and treatment he needed than to arrest him and send him straight to jail,” added Capt. Izzo.
Police did not release the alleged offender’s name. Capt.. Izzo did say the man could be charged with assault on a police officer.
