MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) - The gold shovels and hard hats clue you in this crowd gathered for a groundbreaking.
This site in Madison will soon look a lot less like a patch of dirt and a lot more like a gun store and range.
It's just down the street from the store's current location. The owners came to Madison as contractors, and selling guns made a lot of sense for them.
Russell Durling, one of the owners of Last Resort Guns, says, "We recognized that government contracting was getting to be a bit of a game of musical chairs, so we decided that we'd like to branch out into something more commercial. We are both weapons engineers, and a gun shop seemed to be a good fit for our interests and our skill set."
The owners who keep the weapons on the shelves, come from the UK, where guns are strictly controlled.
It's part of the reason the owners stick around.
Durling explains, "That was one of the things that really drew us to staying here in the United States. We really didn't feel very comfortable with the gun control regime in the United Kingdom."
Controversy now surrounds gun control, but it's not a deterrent for opening a new location. So far, it's been a business blessing.
Durling points out, "We saw a huge rise in gun sales in the period through the early part of this year."
The firing range that will come with the new shop helps Last Resort Guns fulfill part of their mission.
Durling elaborates, "From a personal philosophy point of view, we feel that it's important that people who own firearms should have the ability to practice with them and to have the ability to attend training classes."
Pretty soon Madison residents will have a new place to turn for both their guns and their training.
