HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Every day, about 40,000 drivers zip past the Northwoods public housing development on University Drive just west of Pulaski Pike.
And every day, some of them have to hit their brakes to avoid hitting Northwoods residents trying to cross the seven-lane road on foot.
Wednesday night a man who was trying to cross was hit and killed.
Huntsville Police said the fatal accident happened just before 6:30 p.m. Investigators say Alphonso Holt, 63, was hit by a car traveling west on University Drive, just west of Pulaski Pike. He died at the scene.
Eyewitnesses said Holt had just walked out of a Chevron gas station nearby. Friends tell us Holt was known as “Pop”.
Investigators say Holt was just east of the cross walk when he stepped out in the front of the westbound vehicle. Police say the driver of the car tried to swerve to avoid hitting Holt, but was unable to miss him.
“I think it’s probably more of a pedestrian violation, is what it appears to be at this time,” said Huntsville Police spokesman Lt. Randy Owens. “There’s a high volume of pedestrian traffic in this area. We put cross walks in to try to help with that situation, but unfortunately not everybody uses them.”
WHNT News 19 cameras were rolling Thursday afternoon as several jaywalkers ignored the cross walks in the same stretch of road darting out in front of traffic.
