FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – A data security breach at a well-known chicken restaurant may have led to your credit and debit card being compromised.
Zaxby’s restaurants across the south-east made this announcement after malicious software was found on their computer servers.
Two of the locations thought to be compromised are in the Shoals.
In a time where credit and debit cards are used more than ever, so is the risk of that information being stolen.
Zaxby’s announced that credit card information used for purchases was possibly taken from a server that services the Florence and Muscle Shoals locations.
“We strongly urge you to go over your statements from the bank and your credit card,” said Sergeant Cliff Billingsley with the Florence Police Department. “If you do find something suspicious on there to immediately contact your credit card or bank and report it to them.”
Sgt. Billingsley said people that have dined at Zaxby’s recently need to pay close attention to their accounts.
Billingsley also says that whether it is this Zaxby’s security breach or any other incident, watch your credit report.
Many times Sgt. Billingsley says criminals will use the information on the accounts to apply for other cards in your name.
“Most credit card companies and banks will cover losses if fraudulent use is conducted, so right now just look over your statement each day,” explained Billingsley.
According to a statement from Zaxby’s, additional cyber security has been put in place to make sure this kind of breach does not happen again.
Zaxby’s locations in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Kentucky were affected by this security breach.
