Fire Destroys Limestone County Church
LIMESTONE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A large fire destroyed Cherry Grove Baptist Church early Monday morning.
The fire started around 4:45 a.m. The church is at the corner of Cherry Grove Road and Thacker Street. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
According to Rev. Chris Pirtle, around 50 people attend the church. He has been the pastor for about five years. However, the Cherry Grove Baptist building had been standing much longer.
“1902 is when this church was started, started as a school and a church so yeah, a lot of history, a lot of family histories,” said Pirtle.
Pirtle says many are offering support and encouragement.
“We’ve got people coming out that probably haven’t been inside the church building for 10, 15 years and they’re coming by and saying sorry, seeing the damages,” said Pirtle.
The church will hold its regularly scheduled prayer meeting Monday night at a church deacon’s house. Church leaders are considering a nearby community center for a place of worship until they determine if they will rebuild on the same site. The church has insurance.
