Minneapolis – Jeff Vanderlugt scored his seventh goal of the season on Sunday afternoon, but the University of Alabama in Huntsville hockey team fell 6-1 to Air Force in the third game of the 2012 Mariucci Classic.
Vanderlugt put home his team-leading seventh goal at 13:39 in the second period for UAH (3-16-1) and would cut the deficit to 3-1, but the Falcons (6-8-4) would score three more goals in the third period to give the Chargers their fourth straight loss.
Michael Webley and Alex Allan recorded the assists on the goal, which was the only score of the second period.
Stephen Carew scored twice for Air Force, while four other players tallied goals in the game.
Freshman Gregg Gruehl was given his third start in goal this season, but allowed all six Air Force goals and finished with 31 saves.
Despite their being seven goals scored in the game, none of those scores came off a power play. UAH went 0-for-3 on power plays, while the Falcons went 0-for-2.
Air Force would score two goals in the first three minutes of the game and put UAH in a tough hole to climb out of early on. The Falcons also scored two goals in less than two minutes late in the third period.
The Chargers return to their home ice this coming weekend when they welcome Adrian and Vanderbilt to the VBC on Friday (Jan. 4) and Saturday (Jan. 5). Both  games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
