AUGUSTA, GA – Dan McWhinney recorded a shutout against the Augusta RiverHawks as the Huntsville Havoc picked up a 3-0 win.
Huntsville pulled out the victory even though it was hit with 27 penalty minutes.
The Havoc were paced by Chapen LeBlond, who had one goal. LeBlond scored 55 seconds into the second period to make the score 1-0 Huntsville. Bryant Doerrsam picked up the assist.
Huntsville put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Augusta to score on any of its eight power plays. The 27 shots that the Havoc put on net surpassed Huntsville’s average of 21.8 shots per game this season.
Ian Boots also scored for Huntsville. More assists for Huntsville came via Sam Cannata, Cody Crichton, and Brett Liscomb, who contributed one a piece.
The RiverHawks forced their penalty killing units to work especially hard during the game, picking up nine minors and one major for 53 minutes in penalty time. Augusta had been averaging 20.0 minutes in penalties per game. The RiverHawks were held below their usual level of production. Augusta averages 2.3 goals per game. The RiverHawks’ offense was clicking better than usual and put 46 shots on goal during the game, better than the 29.5 shots per game they average.
Augusta was led by Matt Auffrey, who took 10 shots.
McWhinney recorded 46 saves for the Havoc. Huntsville registered one goal on six power play opportunities. Robbie Moss made 24 saves for the RiverHawks on 27 shots. For Augusta, Casey Mignone was ejected from the game.
