LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) – In the wake of the tragic events that have unfolded in Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School, several churches in the Shoals have started a fundraiser to assist the families of those killed.
In a small country church during worship service Sunday morning, a discussion about the tragedy in Connecticut turned into a call to action.
“While we’re all down here getting prepared for a joyous holiday season, they’re going through a tragedy that we can’t even imagine,” said J.C. Sims, Pastor of Mt. Tabor Church.
Sims and his congregation at Mount Tabor Church in Lauderdale County knew they needed to do something for the families who lost loved ones at Sandy Hook School.
What started as a project for their church has turned into many churches across the Shoals coming together to give a voice of encouragement.
“We’re hoping when we leave out that we’ve got a good supply of stuff to carry them, with cards, letters of encouragement, donations, whatever people can give to help,” said Sims.
Pastor Sims knows this tragedy could happen in our own backyard, and that’s why he feels it’s so important to reach out to the families who lost loved ones — to show them the country is here to lift them up.
“I think Jesus would want us to help, I think he would want us to give,” said Sims. “But most of all, I think he would want us to recognize that these are our brothers and sisters. This is our family, these are our kids, and these could be our kids.”
Pastor Sims says his church is a small one that serves a big God, and he wants the Shoals to help deliver a big word of encouragement to their neighbors in Newtown, Connecticut.
Monetary donations, gifts or cards of encouragement are being accepted at Mount Tabor Church.
The missionary teams from the participating churches plan to leave Florence on Thursday morning for Connecticut.
