HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) - It's something every Huntsville Driver knows, Memorial Parkway is busy. Drivers using or crossing the Parkway like to know everything is as safe as it can possibly be. One driver says the crossroads where Mt. Gap Road meets the Parkway isn't safe. "When I emailed you, that was the second time that I had almost been involved in an accident there," says Judy Shows.
Mt. Gap meets the Parkway on the east side, and directly across from Mt. Gap there's a driveway that takes customers to two businesses, a Kangaroo gas station and a CVS drugs. There's a traffic light at the intersection, and for drivers coming off Mt. Gap, or coming out of the driveway, there are "yield on green to oncoming traffic" signs. The problem is, drivers don't seem to know what they should do.
Drivers who are turning left off Mt. Gap, or turning left out of the driveway often hesitate. They're trying to make sure other drivers aren't coming straight across the intersection. Multiple drivers we observed didn't have their turn signals on. The bottom line, drivers hesitate, and sometimes turn in front of other drivers. "I'm afraid if something is not done, there's going to be a very serious accident there. Somebody is going to lose a life," says Judy Shows.
Judy believes there should be left turn arrows for drivers in all four directions. She says that's what's needed to take the indecision out of using the intersection. We're taking action and discussing the problem with city and state traffic engineers. If the intersection is causing drivers to make unsafe maneuvers, it obviously needs to be changed.
