Pawn Shop Sees Holiday Business Boom, Suggests Weak Economy A Factor
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Busters Pawn Shop shows its holiday spirit. Their store sees extra business in the season.
But they don’t have any illusion that festive feelings alone keep the bell on their door ringing.
Manager Mark Vess explains, “[It's] the economy. people are just having a rough time. More people out of jobs.”
Some buy their gifts here, but most come looking for extra cash to keep Christmas merry.
The view from here suggests the economy could be getting worse for those in need.
Vess says, “So far, it’s picked up more than last year. About this time last year we got so many new customers coming in and trying to pawn stuff, anything they can of value just to get a little bit of money.”
But it’s not just the quantity of pawns. It’s the quality. It shows more and more pressure on people to find extra income.
Vess adds, “I’ve been getting a whole lot more big pawns, up in the five-hundred, thousand dollar bonds. Some people are having it bad.”
Busters has taken pawns for over thirty years, and even they are struck by the number they’re seeing now.
