UPDATE: Police Detonate Suspicious Objects After Pipe Bomb Scare, FBI Investigating
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Huntsville Police and Huntsville Fire Department responded to the scene of two possible pipe bombs at Imperial Gardens Apartment complex on Memorial Parkway Thursday night.
Just after 6:15 p.m., HPD’s bomb squad detonated two suspicious objects outside the building. Official results are still pending, but authorities said the items could be two pipe bombs that were left in the closet of a vacant apartment unit. It’s not yet been determined if the two items were live bombs or just duds.
The apartment complex’s maintenance staff was clearing out the vacant unit on Thursday afternoon when they discovered the two suspicous objects. The complex was vacated for more than two hours. Police allowed residents back into their homes shortly before 7 p.m., and confirmed that the FBI is now assisting with the case.
Police did not have any immediate information on who the former tenants are or where they might now be, but investigators said the renters were evicted last month. Neighbors told WHNT News 19 that the former tenants were a married couple who did not cause any problems during their stay.
