Malzahn Says He Was “Hurting For” Gene Chzik
Just minutes after being introduced as the new Head Football coach at Auburn, Gus Malzahn had to answer questions about the man he is replacing. Gene Chizik and Gus Malzahn led the Tigers to a 2010 BCS National Championship before Malzahn bolted for Arkansas State.
Auburn’s new coach says he has not spoken with Chizik since his firing but plans to talk with him sometime soon. Despite coaching at Arkansas State this season, Malzahn kept a close eye on the situation at Auburn and says he was “hurting for” Chizik.
While Malzahn still considers Chizik a friend, he admits the focus from here on out will be getting Auburn football back on track.
