Future Of Boeing Complex At Research Park Unclear

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.(WHNT)-Speculation is mounting over what will happen to one of Research Park’s biggest office spaces once one of its biggest tenants moves out.

Boeing will soon be moving its Huntsville workforce over to a new facility at Redstone Gateway Complex, but it’s not yet clear what will happen to the company’s current location at Research Park which houses hundreds of employees.

A Chicago-based investment firm owns Boeing’s building on Explorer Boulevard. The owners were not available for comment, and it’s not known if they’ve talked to any potential replacements. Boeing officials previously said they timed the move to Redstone Gateway with the end of their current lease at Research Park.

Huntsville Chamber of Commerce President Chip Cherry told WHNT News 19 that he’s a confident a replacement for Boeing’s Research Park location will be found soon.

“It’s a very desirable location,” said Cherry, who plans to talk to the building owners in the coming weeks. “Whoever winds up in that building will be somebody who’s in the research business, more than likely somebody who’s in the aerospace business.”

Boeing plans to move out of its Research Park facility in phases, with the first wave scheduled to start in spring 2013.
